CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Souji Seta
CANON: Persona 4
HISTORY: https://megamitensei.fandom.com/wiki/Persona_4#Plot
https://megamitensei.fandom.com/wiki/Yu_Narukami

Don't worry about the name, it's the same guy.

STRENGTHS:

+Level-Headedness: Souji is incredibly coolheaded, to the point that he rarely shows emotion openly unless he's particularly comfortable in his present company. He can keep his wits about him even in the weirdest or most dangerous situations. A side effect of this is his appearing to take everything as seriously as a fight to the death, and yet also not showing too much stress even in life-or-death situations.
+Empathy: Souji isn't much of a talker, but he's an excellent listener. He has a truly massive amount of patience for listening to other peoples' problems and is always ready with advice for them if they ask or, more likely, a knack for letting them talk through their own problems and come to their own decision. Souji doesn't presume to know what's best for other people, but he does know that people often know themselves, and he's happy to act as a sounding board for them to figure that out.
+Leadership Talent: Combining the first two strengths with an extremely resolute force of personality makes Souji a natural leader, able to calmly and authoritatively give orders while also understanding the skills and needs of people around him. He's an emotional rock and a natural charmer when he thinks to use that ability, which means he's more than adept at getting people to listen to him, moreso when the situation is already chaotic.

FLAWS:

-Fear of Abandonment: Souji has never had a stable personal life, and his unflappability is at least in part a cover for someone who's given up on forming serious connections for much of his life. Once he does connect with someone, he harbors more than a bit of anxiety about the idea that that relationship will have to end eventually, or that it will end up having been an illusion in the first place. It's an undercurrent of worry that runs counter to his usual cool-guy facade, and an Achilles Heel when it comes to his emotional state.
-Tunnel Vision: Souji is an incredibly focused person, sometimes to his detriment. Whatever he's doing, he's doing to his fullest ability, which can lead to instances of...weirdness when he's hyperfocused and doesn't notice things he should, especially social cues when he's concentrating on something else. He can multitask, but does a lot better at it when it's a lot of simple things rather than a few complex ones. This also leads to him picking up a lot of unrelated hobbies just so he can have something to spend his focus on - he's not good at relaxing either.
-Questionable Judge of Character: Souji has a big heart behind his quiet exterior and sometimes that's a little too big. Despite being jaded about forming close bonds too quickly, once he's gotten to know you for a while, he'll trust you far more than is necessarily wise. It means he can make friends with anyone, but also that he does make friends with anyone, which isn't the best idea in a world full of dishonest people, and frequently leads to him getting talked into things that he might not want to do on his own.

CANON ABILITIES: Souji, as the main character of a PS2 or later Persona game, is capable of summoning many different Personas, aspects of his personality manifesting with the shape of mythological creatures from the Collective Unconscious of humanity and an extremely wide variety of magical abilities. It would be way beyond the scope of this app to list all Persona abilities, but generally, they can attack physically or magically with a variety of elemental attacks, and also alter attributes of allies or enemies, or inflict the expected suite of RPG status effects. Souji in particular is rare (in his iteration of the Persona timeline) in that he can summon many, as well as work with Igor to fuse lesser Personas into greater ones. Summoning many Personas is an ability called the Wild Card that could (and in his case does) reflect unique potential as well as contact with a particularly powerful Shadow. In the particular case of Persona 4, possessing the power of Persona allows him to access a slice of humanity's Collective Unconscious through TV screens acting as portals and deal with other eldritch space-time shenanigans in spinoffs on a level most humans can't.

In canon, Souji is also an apt if amateur sword fighter, using katanas and broadswords (incorrectly yet still effectively) to fight Shadows. He also practices a variety of hobbies, some of them skilled like Origami, sleight of hand, and basketb-- okay he didn't actually play basketball, he just skipped practice to chat a lot.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Souji Seta
AGE: 16
GRADE: 11th
AU BACKSTORY:

  • As in canon, moved around a great deal within Japan due to parents' work and the need for family members to look after him.
  • Has a large extended family, but never stayed in one place for longer than a year or two.
  • Around fourth or fifth grade, lived in the same town as Orihime Inoue and hit a couple jerks with a shinai (discussed with player - Orihime's, not the jerks).
  • One day much more recently, Souji was on the way home from the latest in his long chain of schools when he stumbled across strange fog - actually Outland Mists encroaching on reality.
  • He made contact with and attempted (read: attempted) to fight a Daemon within the Mists, which was more interested in observing him. His Flame awoke during this encounter, at which point the Daemon retreated from whatever it was doing.
  • While still lost and confused about this whole Fog With Monsters In It thing, another denizen of the Outlands named Igor got in contact with him to explain his power and what else he could do with it. In exchange for that bit of information, and a safe place to use his abilities to "fuse" Daemons together, Souji reservedly agreed to Igor's offer of a Contract.
  • Souji found himself transferred to Daybreak Academy without much notice, and without his parents apparently actually knowing what it is. As far as Souji knows that they know, he was accepted to a very prestigious (and tuition-paid) boarding school in another country. It's another day in the life for him, but fortunately, he at least got briefed that he's here to fight monsters.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Souji is largely unchanged from canon, except for the fact that he's been displaced much further from home and is already aware of the supernatural when he is so. That makes him a little more serious and standoffish than at the start of canon, and certainly more so than later on in the story. He doesn't have family here (yet) the way he has the Dojimas in canon, so it could take some effort to bring him out of his non-reactive shell, especially since he's pretty sure he should focus on fighting monsters over socializing. Of course, he might find that making friends helps with saving the world, but he probably won't get explicit superpowers from that in this universe. Probably. Teamwork is helpful anyway, though, and he hasn't learned that quite yet.

RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: Souji is a Candle, but like Ren formed a sort of Contract with an Outlands being named Igor to help enhance his power. They'll likely be forming a social club of sorts shortly.

POWERS: Souji is a Candle-powered Tamer. Like Ren and Minako, he has the power to both evoke a portion of his own psyche - his protective instinct, specifically - in a daemonic form and to capture and control lesser Daemons of the Outlands. Souji's inner Daemon calls itself Izanagi, and takes the form of a humanoid in a mask and coat that can fight on Souji's behalf with a spear or lightning bolts, or increase Souji's endurance. Souji can also form a sort of Contract with minor Daemons of the Outlands, commanding them with force of personality. Rather than carry them within himself in some way, he can (with their agreement) put them into a magically-formed card that he then carries around and breaks to release them for combat. The downside to this is they don't always want to go back in the card...

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT

1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?

I'm looking forward to staying in one place for a couple of years. Maybe even more than two.

2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?

Learning how to hit a monster with another monster sounds like a good idea. I'm going to focus on that before I make any other plans.

4. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?

Food.

[Deliberate beat.]

Okay, an education in a safe environment.

6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?

I like reading, so language and literature classes are nice. Philosophy is also usually a fun subject. Really, I'm gonna refer to the "hit a monster with another monster" idea again, though. That's why I was invited, right?

7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?

I don't have a least favorite subject, but a bad teacher can make almost anything really unpleasant. I'll still study, it's just not as interesting.

9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?

Find something to do. Reading, origami, sports, babysitting a second or third cousin when one's available, cooking, one time I folded envelopes for money. Never quite been bored enough to fold envelopes for free. I'm always willing to try something new, though.

10. WHEN UNDER PRESSURE OF A TIGHT DEADLINE, HOW DO YOU RESPOND?

If I know something is coming up, I try to finish working on it early. Running right up against a deadline is really stressful, so I try to avoid it, but if I need to keep working, I keep working.

11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?

I don't know, but I'm looking forward to finding out. New schools are always a mystery, but this one has superpowers, so it's probably a fun mystery.

12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?

Everyone's got strengths and weaknesses, and they'll usually say what they are if you ask. Organizing tasks according to that usually works.

13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?

I do pretty well on my own, but working together is always better, isn't it?

14. IN THIS EVER-CHANGING WORLD, WHAT MOST EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE?

Giant robots.

15. WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?

Other giant robots.

Also, having to leave here eventually might be a problem. We'll see how long I get to stay.

17. WHAT IN THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?

I'm pretty sure you asked this question twice.
